Meet the Twitterkids of Tanzania
Last month, in Moivaro village of Arusha, Tanzania, in the shadow of Mt. Meru, Shepherds Junior School was connected to the internet. The students of Class Five, dubbed the #Twitterkids, sent their first tweets from the classroom built through your gratitude during last year’s TweetsGiving.Students who have never had library access now draw from an entire world of information. Children whose voices are seldom heard can converse in real time with people like you across the globe. To our knowledge, this classroom is the first of its kind. African primary school children are using twitter to share their lives and learn from people around the world.
For more details from our recent work in Tanzania, including videos, photos and in-depth coverage, check out the “I <3 Epic Change” Blog created by our fabulous volunteers Melissa & AJ Leon of theLacProject. This work would not have been possible without their support. You can also read the coverage about the #twitterkids in the Huffington Post.
We often hear the stories of children in the so-called “developing” world from the perspective of the media, nonprofits, or friends who have traveled or volunteered. Now these students can share their own stories, and build relationships with the rest of the world for themselves. How will the world be different when they move into our virtual backyard? How will it change their lives to know that their voices are heard?
